The Wrong Reflection

Have you ever caught your reflection in a dark window and, just for a second, thought you saw something that wasn't there?

That's what we're playing with today.

It's late. Somewhere around two in the morning, because apparently nothing good happens after midnight in October.

You're sitting alone in an almost empty diner.

It's raining outside. Your coffee is getting cold. The waitress disappeared into the back a few minutes ago, and you're staring out the window, wondering how long you can sit here before you have to make the miserable drive home.

That's when you notice your reflection.

Except there's something wrong with it.

Someone is sitting across from Reflection You.

You look at the booth across from you.

Empty.

You look back at the window.

The stranger is still there.

They're sitting perfectly still with their back toward you.

Okay.

Nope.

Maybe you're tired. Maybe the weird diner lighting is playing tricks on you. Maybe it's time to stop drinking coffee at two in the morning and go home.

Then your reflection moves.

You don't.

She slowly turns her head away from the stranger.

And looks directly at you.

Her eyes are wide.

Terrified.

She lifts one hand against the glass.

Then she mouths one word.

Run.

That's where today's prompt begins.

Who is sitting across from your reflection?

Why can your reflection see something you can't?

And what exactly are you supposed to be running from?

Have fun with this one.

And maybe don't check your reflection in any dark windows tonight.

You're welcome. 😈
