Day 11: You Look Better Now
31 Days of Visual Horror Prompts
I love a cozy bedroom. Give me a warm blanket, a few candles, a good book, and a cat curled up somewhere nearby, and I'm perfectly happy.
Preferably with nobody bothering me.
But one thing would absolutely ruin that peaceful little moment.
Looking into my bedroom mirror and seeing someone standing there who isn't supposed to be there.
Nope. Absolutely not.
Welcome to Day 11 of my 31 Days of Visual Horror Prompts!
Today's image is a little different from some of our previous horrors. We're not wandering through abandoned buildings or creepy orchards. We're staying home, surrounded by all the things that are supposed to make us feel comfortable and safe.
Except something isn't quite right.
There's a woman in the mirror.
And she looks a lot like you.
I've always thought mirrors were a little creepy. Not necessarily during the day when you're fixing your hair or checking to make sure you don't have toothpaste on your shirt before leaving the house.
I'm talking about those middle-of-the-night moments when you walk past a dark mirror and catch something moving out of the corner of your eye.
You know perfectly well it's probably your own reflection.
Probably.
But what if it wasn't?
What if your reflection started changing without you noticing?
Imagine waking up every morning looking a little better than you did the day before. Your skin clears up, the dark circles under your eyes disappear, and even those little scars you've had forever begin fading.
Everyone notices.
Friends compliment you. Strangers smile. People keep asking what you've been doing differently.
And honestly, after years of being exhausted and looking like you haven't slept since 1997, you might actually enjoy it.
I know I would.
But then one night, you wake up and find someone standing inside your mirror.
She's pale, exhausted, and terrified.
And she looks exactly like you used to.
Well, shit.
Now I'm going to need more than a cup of coffee to deal with this.
What I find disturbing about this idea isn't necessarily the woman trapped in the mirror. It's the possibility that you might not be the person you think you are anymore.
Maybe something has been replacing you a little at a time.
Maybe every improvement comes at someone else's expense.
Or perhaps the woman in the mirror is the real you, and the thing walking around in your body is slowly becoming something else entirely.
And here's the part that really gets me.
What if you don't want to stop?
What if your life is finally getting better? You're happier, healthier, more confident, and everyone seems to love this new version of you.
Would you be willing to give all of that up for a stranger trapped behind a piece of glass?
Even if that stranger used to be you?
I love horror that makes us question ourselves. The kind where the monster isn't necessarily lurking under the bed or waiting in the woods.
Sometimes the monster is the person staring back at us.
And sometimes we might actually like what we see.
Every morning, you wake up looking a little different.
Your eyes seem brighter. Your skin looks healthier. Even the old scars you've carried for years are disappearing.
Everyone keeps telling you how wonderful you look.
Then one night, you wake up to find a woman standing inside your bedroom mirror.
She looks exactly like you did a month ago.
She presses her hand against the glass and whispers:
"Please stop letting her take pieces of me."
Who is the woman in the mirror, and what have you been becoming?
Take this one in whatever direction your imagination wants to go. Psychological horror, supernatural horror, body horror, or something completely unexpected.
Personally, I think the scariest ending would be discovering that the woman in the mirror isn't asking you to save her.
She's warning you.
Happy writing!
And maybe don't stare into the mirror too long tonight.
Just in case something decides to stare back.
